Grass Dancer | from Warriors Among Us
Part of a series honoring the warrior tradition as a living, breathing presence in contemporary Indigenous life, this figurative oil portrait captures the dignity, strength, and spiritual depth of an intertribal community — seen through the eyes and brush of an Ojibwe artist. These are not historical figures frozen in the past. They are fathers, sons, and community leaders, standing fully in their power.
This painting honors the grass dancer, common to the northern tribes — the one who enters first, laying down the grass to bless the ground so all other dancers may follow. His regalia of yarn and ribbons in cascading color mirrors the sway of tall prairie grasses, while his footwork — identical on left and right — embodies life’s perfect balance.
Behind him, four horses stand in a row, one for each sacred direction. North, South, East, West. The horse is deeply revered by his people, and here they serve as altar. The dancer stands before them in prayer — honoring the animals his ancestors held sacred, aligning with the directions that hold the world in balance. The dance and the prayer are one.
To own this work is to hold that balance — an invitation into a living tradition, not artifact, but affirmation.
