DESCRIPTION
Medicine for the Movement is a contemporary oil painting rooted in my perspective as an Ojibwe artist and my ongoing exploration of social justice and resistance.
Inspired by the ribbon skirt and the jingle dress, this work brings Indigenous visual traditions into conversation with today’s movements. The rainbow represents the inclusive nature of the work—the belief that there is room for all people within the movement for equality, dignity, and human rights.
The jingles of the dress become a visual language of their own. In this painting, I imagine them as protest signs: each one carrying the energy of equality, human rights, progressive thought, and the continued call for change. Together, they create a rhythm of resistance—an insistence that our voices, our differences, and our humanity matter.
The title Medicine for the Movement speaks to the healing power of collective action, visibility, and hope. For me, resistance is not only about opposing injustice; it is also about imagining and creating a more inclusive future.
This painting resonated deeply with viewers when it was first exhibited, becoming one of the works that sparked meaningful conversations at my art show. It is part of my Social Justice and Resistance series, where I explore contemporary issues through an Indigenous lens.
The original is painted in oil on museum-quality canvas, with 1.5-inch gallery-style sides that are fully painted, allowing the work to be displayed without a frame if desired.
